Her flagship program, KUUMBA, introduced first-time juvenile offenders to college life offering exposure, mentorship, and hope. Many participants went on to pursue higher education, crediting her programs with changing the trajectory of their lives.Mrs. Ikhinmwin firmly believed that when young people are given access, mentorship, leadership opportunities, and exposure to successful role models, they are empowered to reach their full academic potential and positively impact their communities.

Scholarship Purpose

This scholarship supports students who reflect Mrs. Ikhinmwin’s values of education, service, resilience, and leadership and who are committed to continuing her legacy of community impact.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a Baltimore County graduating high school senior

  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA

  • Have completed at least 100 hours of community service

  • Write no more than one (1) full page answering:
    “Why is serving the community important to you, and how has your community service shaped who you are today or who you want to become?”

Students who embody service, determination, and a vision for a better future are encouraged to apply. This scholarship is more than financial support it is an investment in the next generation of leaders. The deadline for the application is April 30, 2026. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified by May 15, 2026.

The Ikhinmwin Scholarship Fund was established to honor the life, leadership, and legacy of Deanna Vivian Ikhinmwin a pioneering educator, community leader, and tireless advocate for youth empowerment through education and service.

About the Legacy

​Deanna Ikhinmwin’s academic journey began as a scholarship student at Delaware State University, later transferring to Howard University where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in African Studies. At a time when higher education was not widely accessible to Black women, she became the first in her family to pursue and complete a college degree.For over 50 years, Mrs. Ikhinmwin dedicated her career to higher education and community service, holding faculty and administrative roles at colleges and universities across the United States. She served 30 years as the Director of Community Service at Morgan State University, where she designed and led more than 15 innovative tutoring, mentoring, cultural, and leadership programs serving youth throughout Baltimore City.
